Most people know you can freeze your property taxes in Texas if you are over 65. Additionally, if you are disabled or a surviving spouse you can freeze your property taxes if you are over 55. But many people do not know you can move your over 65 Texas Property Tax school exemption.
So if you are planning to move to new home you can request a Tax Ceiling Certificate. This allows you to transfer your over 65 Texas property tax by reducing the school taxes on your new home.
The tax ceiling is an “upper limit” dollar amount applied by your school districts tax office. Texas Legislation in January 2004 enabled the school tax ceiling certificate for Texas homeowners property taxes.
If you move, you first need to apply for the over 65 exemption or the disability exemption for your new home. Then you can move the percentage of Texas school taxes paid on your previous home. It is not the upper limit dollar amount that is transferable but the percentage of school taxes paid.
